6 WAYS TO HELP YOUR KIDS HAVE HEALTHY TEETH AND GUMS

By: Smileway Dental

Practicing good oral hygiene is the most important action that a person can take to prevent and treat gum disease. Healthy teeth and gums are important to your child’s overall health. They helpyour child eat and talk. Strong oral care helps set good dental habits as your child grows. Poor oral care can lead to dental cavities and gum disease.

There are a few ways to help your kids have a healthy teeth and gums:

  1. Get a Check-up.

Dentists recommend children have their first dental visit before the age of one, and this isso important. During these first visits, the dentist can evaluate your child’s dental development and help you create the most appropriate home care routine for your family. Once your child sees the dentist for the first time, you should continue to schedule an appointment every 6 months for a check-up and cleaning.

  1. Teach good habit.

Teach kids to brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

Make sure you act as a good role model by taking care of your teeth, too.

  1. Avoid the bedtime baby bottle.

Don’t put your infant or older child down for a nap with a bottle of juice, formula, or milk. Sugary liquids stick to his teeth, feeding bacteria that can cause tooth decay.

  1. Cut back on juice.

Reduce the consumption of juice as acid is juices can cause erosion of teeth surfaces.

  1. Limit or avoid some food.

Sugary food, candy (especially sticky gummy candy, gummy vitamins, or fruit leather) cause cavities. If your kids eat these foods, tell them to rinse their mouth or brush their teeth after eating to wash away the sugar. The same goes for taking sweetened liquid medicines.

  1. Stand firm on brushing, flossing and rinsing.

Teach your child to brush firmly enough to remove debris, but gently enough so the gums are not damaged. You can start flossing your children’s teeth as soon as they have more than a single tooth in a row. This will get them into the habit of flossing early on. Flossing is especially good for gum health because it removes plaque and food particles from hard to reach places in the gums. Encourage your child to spit out toothpaste after brushing.Clean all surfaces of the teeth and gums twice a day (after breakfast and before bed).Children will need an adult to help them brush their teeth until about 7 or 8 years of age.

These are some of the steps you can take to have a stronger and healthier tooth.  After all, we all want to make sure we are problem free and we can enjoy our life and food for many years.
