COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTH DISCOLORATION

  • Tobacco use

Tobacco not only increases your chances of gum disease, it can also cause your teeth to turn yellow.

  • Poor dental hygiene

Poor dental hygiene, such as inadequate brushing or flossing, can lead to tooth discoloration

  • The aging process

As you age, your tooth enamel becomes thinner, revealing the dentin underneath that also yellows with age.

  • Certain food and beverage

Coffee, tea, sodas drink, red wine, and even a few fruits and vegetables are proven causes of discolored teeth

  • Certain illness and medication

Sometimes medical treatments can contribute to teeth stain, and several classes of medications including high blood pressure medications, chemotherapy, antihistamines and some antipsychotic medications can cause teeth stains & turn to yellow.

  • Trauma

Any trauma, illness, or disease that affects enamel development in children, either in the womb or while teeth are developing (under the age of 8) can cause discolored teeth. Trauma to adult teeth can also cause discolored teeth.

If you notice a change in the colour of your teeth and it doesn’t get better with a whitening product, it’s a good idea to follow up with your dentist.

Some tooth discoloration is irreversible. In that case, your dentist can cover up the discoloration with veneers, crowns, and composite fillings.
