CAUSES AND PREVENTION OF BAD BREATH

Bad breath is basically smelly odor that comes from the oral cavity.

There are a few causes of bad breath:

Food – Strong odor food such as onions and garlic

Tobacco products – Nicotine and other chemical substances in cigarette can cause bad breath

Poor dental hygiene – Food debris and bacteria trapped in between teeth are most common cause of bad breath

Tooth decay – This is one of the most common cause of bad breath as well.

Dry mouth – People with less saliva, older people, people with diseases or chemotherapy/radiotherapy can have dry mouth

Infection in mouth – Oral infection from bacteria, virus, or fungus can cause bad breath

Other causes – Some systemic diseases, for example stomach or gut disorders can cause bad breath.

  • How to reduce or prevent bad breath,
  • Brush your teeth after you eat
  • Floss at least one a day
  • Brush your tongue
  • Clean dentures or dental appliances
  • Avoid dry mouth
  • Adjust your diet
  • Schedule regular dental checkup
