How to reduce pain when wearing braces?

By: Smileway Dental

Dental braces is a treatment to correct crowded or crooked teeth and help position them with regard to a person’s bite, while also aiming to improve dental health.

Braces also can fix many problems like gap, underbites, overbites, open bites, deep bite, cross bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw. However, during this treatment some people might feel slightly uncomfortable.

How to reduce the pain?

  1. Orthodontic Wax

This is a special wax that protects the inside of your lips and cheeks and your gums from the brackets of the braces. The wax creates a barrier that keeps the sharp ends of the brackets from irritating your mouth

  1. Good Dental Hygiene

We need to keep our teeth and bracket clean to avoid tooth decay and gum inflammation. Food will get stuck on the brackets and wires so you need to clean them thoroughly too. It is advisable to use a superfloss or an interdental brush to clean areas in between the teeth and around the metal brackets.

  1. Rinse with Salt Water

Constant rubbing from the metal wires can result in sores. Rinse with a warm salt water helps alleviate discomfort and will help prevent any potential infection.

  1. Softer Foods

Choose softer foods and drinks, such as smoothies, yogurt, soups, and mashed potatoes, especially for the first week. After the pain subsides, you can resume your normal eating habit.

  1. Take medication if needed

Get some painkillers to come in handy only if the pain could not be tolerated, which rarely happens. Over-the-counter painkillers, such as mefanemic acid and ibuprofen helps.

These are some of the steps you can take to have a stronger and healthier tooth. After all, we all want to make sure we are problem free and we can enjoy our life and food for many years.
