Mouthwash:  Advantages and Disadvantages

Mouthwash is used widely to keep the breath fresh and prevents build-up of bacteria. There are various types of mouthwash available on market such as daily care formulas, alcohol-free variants, and herbal mixtures, all designed to promote good oral health, good hygiene and fresh breath. But with all other things, it has an advantages and disadvantages.

Benefits

  1. Mouthwash promote good oral health and hygiene

Some washes are covered with fluoride to help fight cavities and periodontal disease. Antiseptic mouthwash, on the other hand, contains chlorhexidinegluconate, which prevents bacterial growth in the mouth and deals with halitosis and infection.

  1. Mouthwash aids in post-surgery treatment

There are certain mouthwashes prescribed by your dentist that help treat inflammation and wounds after dental surgery. This type of mouthwash is usually recommended for patients who are advised not to brush their teeth for long period of time after a surgical procedure.

  1. Mouthwash can help heal a canker sore

It is ulcer in the mouth and using mouthwash helps to control the infection.

  1. Mouthwash can help prevent complications during pregnancy

Mouthwash can prevent periodontal disease, which can lead to premature labor in pregnant women. When bacteria enter the mother’s bloodstream, it increases the inflammatory markers and stimulates contraction. Gargling with mouthwash can help prevent it from happening, as it keeps the bacteria away

Disadvantages

  1. Health hazard for children

Children are prone to accidentally ingesting mouthwash, and it can have a serious health hazard for them. It can result from convulsions and other more serious cases such as comatose. Children between the ages of 6 and 12 should be under the supervision of an adult when using mouthwash to avoid any health hazard.

  1. Can damage several parts of the mouth

Washing with high alcohol content can burn fine mucus in the mouth.

  1. Mouthwash can stain and darken teeth

Some mouthwashes have an ingredient called chlorhexidinegluconate. This ingredient helps prevent bacterial growth, but this may cause of discoloration of the teeth. Chlorhexidinegluconate can cause stain on one’s teeth when it gets in contact with food additives that in our mouth such as tannis that is common on coffee, tea and red wine.

Using a mouthwash is not a substitute for brushing your teeth; it is just one of the things to do to improve one’s oral health. It can be helpful or harmful, depends on how you use it. Always remember to consult your dentist first and find the right type of mouthwash for you.

Going to the dentist obviously isn't my favourite thing to do so I've been putting off my visit way too long. I was pleasantly surprised after my appointment with Dr Edwin. He and his team were very assuring and there was barely any pain/discomfort during and after my scaling/polishing appointment.

Dr Belinda did my composite veneer 7 years ago and she changed my life. They lasted well over the expected time (~6 years +) and I just recently got them redone. She is so professional, pure dedication to her craft and makes me feel confident when I smile, it’s all thanks to Dr Belinda. Thank you Doc! 🦷❤️

Time really flies—it's been 7 amazing years since I started coming to Smileway Dental for my regular check-ups, and I couldn’t be more grateful. Dr. Edwin and Dr. Jon are both incredibly professional, gentle, and genuinely caring. They have a way of making you feel completely at ease, even if you're someone who’s usually nervous about dental visits. I came to Smileway Dental after a traumatic experience during a wisdom tooth extraction at another clinic, and honestly, I've been “stuck” here ever since—in the best possible way! Their approach is calm, thorough, and always with your comfort in mind. I've also recommended several friends to Smileway, and they’ve all raved about the quality of service—especially for braces and dental scaling. Everyone agrees: the team here is warm, welcoming, and truly skilled. Highly recommend for anyone looking for long-term, reliable, and heartwarming dental care! 💙🦷

Met Dr Jon Low some years ago. Really nice dentist. Super & excellent well versed in his practice. Has been with him for many years now. Recently I have been thinking about a ceramic tooth in-plant.. Needed to consider carefully as it's not cheap at all... But if I ever do decide to go for it, there's no one better suited than Dr Jon with the procedure. I trust him fully. Their staff are friendly, polite & nice. It's so good to see that he has expended. We are super happy for him! & best of all, he knows a lot about the safe protocol removal of amalgam. Perfect!

Great experience with Dr Belinda! My 9 yo son and I will always go to her and because of Dr Belinda gentleness, my son is not afraid to go to the dentist. Dr Belinda is also very precised and will do any treatment perfectly. 👍🏻👍🏻
