A filling is used to treat small cavities or holes present on a tooth surface due to bacterial or mechanical origin. Before fillings, all food debris and plaque needs to be removed for the material to stick well to tooth surface and prevent any secondary infections.
Tooth decay is damage to teeth that can occur when harmful bacteria in the oral cavity produces acid which erodes the surface of the teeth which is called enamel. This can lead to cavitation and black discoloration of teeth. If decay is not treated, the hole will burrow deeper causing teeth aches and pain.
Different types of filling materials are silver amalgam, composite and glass ionomer cement. Silver amalgam is the strongest and oldest dental filling present. Next is composite which is a tooth colored filling. Glass ionomer cement or GIC can be used as a temporary dressing to reduce sensitive teeth before placing a permanent restoration.
