Disinfection and Sterilisation

By: Smileway Dental

Disinfection and sterilization are both decontamination processes. While disinfection is the process of eliminating or reducing harmful microorganisms from inanimate objects and surfaces, sterilization is the process of killing all microorganisms

Sterilizing and disinfecting the dental instruments kill the germs and bacteria, so no one else will be exposed to it. This prevents dentists from inadvertently spreading viral and bacterial infections when treating patients.

Disinfection can be done using disinfectant sprays and detergents to reduce the number of harmful bacteria by killing them and rendering them inactive. Dental instruments are disinfected regularly by immersing them in detergents for a period of time before sterilization.

Sterilization is the main method of killing all harmful microbes and bacteria. By placing instruments into an autoclave which uses high temperature and pressure, the process is able to eliminate more than 99% of bacteria or viruses, rendering all dental instruments safe for the next patient.
