Effect of Missing Teeth on Oral Health

By: Smileway Dental

Missing teeth occurs due to decay that is not restorable or loosening of teeth caused by gum disease. Missing teeth can be uncomfortable and unsightly, also will cause difficulty chewing and talking.

Some problems encountered with missing teeth

Gums shrink and recede

Missing teeth causes the jaw bone to shrink and gums to recede at the particular site. It can weaken the teeth on either side of your missing tooth or teeth. Thus, increase the risk of your adjacent teeth to have problems with plaque buildup and tooth decay.

Neighboring teeth may tilt into the gap.

Teeth are always moving. We could see neighbouring teeth tilt into the gap caused by missing teeth. This can lead to crooked teeth, thus causing the entire dentition to have problems in alignment.

Overeruption of opposing teeth

Missing teeth can cause the opposite arch teeth to grow longer or overerupt.

For example, if you have a missing lower first molar, the opposing upper first molar might have a tendency to overerupt.

Gum problems

Overeruption and tilting will cause gum disease. This is because the space between teeth is wider, more food accumulation and harder to clean. If not cleaned well, there is a high risk of gum disease at the area.

Sensitive teeth

Teeth that are overerupted tends to be sensitive because of the exposed tooth roots.

How to prevent missing teeth
