By: Smileway Dental

Mouthwash is an antibacterial agent. It can be used in adjunct to toothbrushing and flossing. Toothbrushing is effective against plaque, adding mouthwash to the mix can be more effective in reducing the amount of bacteria in the mouth, making you less susceptible to having oral health concerns such as gingivitis or cavities.

According to a survey, plaque was reduced by 26.3% for those using a germ killing mouthwash. Gingivitis was also reduced by 20.4% for those using a germ killing mouthwash.

These are some benefits of using a mouthwash:

  • Quick and easy to use
  • Kills bacteria and germs
  • Give you a thorough clean when used with brushing and flossing
  • Freshen your breath
  • Reach all tooth surfaces

However, always keep in mind that mouthwash is used after toothbrushing and flossing and never to replace the latter two. Mechanical methods of brushing and flossing is the most dominant factor in maintaining good oral health compared to chemical method of using a mouthwash. It is not compulsory to use. You can opt to use it to further reduce bacteria and to have better breath.
